Bathtub
Diane’s earliest memories include being bathed by her mother, arguably the warmest, most tender and intimate time Pam devoted to Diane. Pam would fill the bathtub with water toys and bubble bath, shampoo and condition Diane’s hair, and tell her stories about mermaids and water sprites. During Diane’s bath, her cat Polly liked to walk along the edge of the tub to bat at the toys and foam. One day when Diane was four, Polly fell into the tub and scratched Diane’s chest. Startled, Diane hit her head on the faucet, fell below the water line, and inhaled large amounts of water. She remembers splashing frantically and waiting for her mother’s help for “what felt like forever.” After that incident, Pam did not permit Polly to stand on the edge of the tub. Diane still claims not to like cats.
