After graduating from high school, Diane moved from her parents’ house to an apartment complex in town and spent a few years supporting herself by working at Borders. She liked the independence of having her own job, but couldn’t really imagine herself working at a retail store for the rest of her life. She decided to reduce her hours, enroll at the community college, and explore other options. No careers immediately drew her, so she took some English classes, a psychology class, and a studio art class. Diane discovered that she had a knack for painting, especially tiny, highly-detailed miniatures inspired by the images on her tarot cards. Her parents, however, did not encourage her to pursue art seriously. To them, it was not a real career.
