Diane was born on August 13, 1982 in Tempe, Arizona to Pam and Robert Murdock.
Pam is a sales representative at a clothing boutique in Tucson, Arizona. Before motherhood, Pam worked as a journalist covering the arts, food, and community events for the Tempe Sun. When Diane was born, Pam stopped working to stay at home with her new baby. Though she and Robert agreed that this was the best course, Pam often blamed Diane for having to abandon her career. In her worst moments, Pam openly rejected Diane, treating her coldly or avoiding her altogether in order to enact an oblique form of punishment.Diane’s father is the manager of a local bank. His busy work schedule kept him from participating in much of Diane’s upbringing. His absence aggravated Pam’s resentment for Diane: struggling to cope with her change in professional identity, Pam felt lonely and abandoned by her husband. Instead of bonding with Diane, Pam retreated from her and began to begrudge both her daughter and Robert.
